Stan is a man with a problem. Stan is about to get up on Monday morning. In front of his apartment sits his car, an ordinary vehicle containing only a cup of gas. Stan lives just around the corner from a major intersection that features a Starbucks on one corner and an Exxon on the other. Stan has a job making widgets at a factory about 15 miles away. Because he works “piece meal”, at days-end he’s paid for the number of widgets he has made. Stan’s wallet, like his fridge, is kind of bare. He has no credit, debit or ATM cards. There are just three $1 bills to be found. One last detail: Stan loves his coffee!
What is Stan going to do? This story shows that corporations are not all alike. What Starbucks sells is very different than what Exxon sells, and we’re not referring to the fact that we don’t drink gasoline! People need gasoline but they don’t need to spend $3 for a cup of coffee. Heck, they don’t need to drink coffee at all. Explore the different types of corporations so you can think about which suit you and your investing objectives.
